PERSONALITY:
If there's two words that could easily describe Sumiko, it would be strange and eccentric; and she knows it. On a first meeting basis, she seems to be slow, naïve, and (for those bad guys out there) easy to manipulate. In a normal situation, she often speaks in slow and drawn out fashion that hints at lacking intelligence; not to mention that it's not rare for her to say something that's simply just odd. However, the truth is quite the opposite as she is, in actuality, exceptionally smart. This is somewhat done purposefully, as Sumiko doesn't want to be singled out for her intelligence. The other reason being that she finds it fun to give people the wrong impression about herself. The last reason, is that she has a strangely (selective?) lethargic side to her. She's likely to sleep in the middle of a classroom, for example, but her grades are generally good.

Sumiko's hardly a serious minded individual, and is rather playful despite her generally outward lazy behavior. She enjoys a number of recreational activities, widely ranging from sports to video/computer games. For all her oddness, she does generally enjoy social activities as well (especially karaoke). She has little love for schoolwork, however, despite the fact that she generally excels. In her own way, Sumiko is a bit of a pervert, but the way she displays that isn't quite in a "normal" way. For example, it could come out as either a rather strange comment that is unclear what she's actually saying, or grabbing somebody in what could hardly be considered a suggestive manner but is still strangely awkward. She does have a sense of restraint with physical contact, though, as in she's not going to just do that to somebody who's merely an acquaintance.

Should Sumiko ever be put into a hostile situation, she will likely still maintains her odd outward personality, but her actual actions in the battlefield are a strange contrast. She won't hesitate to protect those close to her, and is even likely to take blows for their sake. The safety of others certainly comes before defeating her enemies, and she certainly won't like it if a friend is hurt. If she has anything to say about it, she'll be the first one to go down should it come to that. This is a good example of the fact that she has a strong self-less side, and while she is hardly a glory hound she has a somewhat self-sacrificing facet to her personality. However, she isn't the type that will mindlessly do so unless the situation is truly dire. In the event that things do become that bad, it is likely she will drop her odd personality for something more serious to the situation.

In some instances, Sumiko can come off as rather blunt. For instance, if she thinks somebody is doing something stupid, she'll go ahead and state it straight out. In a combat situation, she's likely to downright insult the attacker if she has reason to believe they're being hostile for a stupid reason. She's still likely to deliver whatever she has to say in her general slow manner of speaking, however.

Lastly, it should be important to note that Sumiko is still a teenage girl who is a number of years from being considered a true adult. While it may seem like many situations don't bother her, she simply oftentimes keeps a stoic face. She's uncertain about her future and what she wants to do with herself, especially now that she's suddenly developed mutant powers.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Blue flames: Sumiko is able to project a blue flame from her body. This can either be used to envelope her whole body as a sort of shielding mechanism, or she can cast it out as a projectile. Any fire that she causes that leaves her control will turn into a normal fire after a small duration; assuming that it does catch something on fire.

Fortunately, she won't inconveniently burn anything she's wearing and/or holding if she covers herself in flames.

While she takes no damage from her own fire, she has no resistance to normal fire unless she covers herself in her own fire.

All in all, her power is fairly weak. It'd take some effort for her to set fire to something that isn't in a flammable condition (like gasoline, dry grass, etc). It doesn't help that she's only recently had her power awaken (at least, at the time of writing this application).

On a mundane note, Sumiko has taken some classes in self-defense (Karate, to be specific), but she wouldn't stand a chance against somebody who's rigorously trained for serious combat.

AU HISTORY:
Sumiko was the daughter of a well off family in Japan, the youngest out of four children; all sisters by the name of (going from eldest to youngest) Satoko, Satsuki, and Shizuru. However, her mother died from an illness before she could even form any emotional attachment to her. Sumiko's father became a little strange after that, although not quite in any sort of bad way. He became rather emotional and smothering when it came to his four daughters, doting on them whenever he had the chance.

While the loss of the maternal figure of the family upset the balance for a time, they at least did not fall financially. The eldest sister became something of a replacement mother for Sumiko. But all in all, it was an odd family setup that lead to Sumiko developing a sort of strange behavior.

Still, Sumiko's school life had been rather normal. She made a few friends, though her odd personality put off quite a few. While her second and third older sisters eventually moved out of the household, Satoko still lived in the household. She claims that it was due to her father's pathetic crying to convince her to say, but in some ways it was just laziness in finding a good place to move to. That wasn't to say she bummed off her father, as she at least found good employment after attending college.

However, Sumiko's normal school life would come to an abrupt end on... what was a relatively mundane day. It had started out as clear skies, and Sumiko had unfortunately missed the weather forecast for that day. While on her way home from school, the skies overhead darkened and she found herself in the middle of a rain storm that chilled her to the bone. An unfortunate thought occurred to her as she shivered, “Oh... if only I had a fire.”

She was certainly miserable, wearing light summer clothes that day. But the sudden blue flames that wrapped around her form failed to extinguish in the deluge of water. She certainly received a lot of gawking, and considering she wasn't flailing around it (fortunately) didn't occur to anybody to try to “help” her.

Arriving home, she realized... maybe it would be bad if she accidentally set her home on fire. So, she just stood there at the door as she tried to figure out how to make the flames stop. Both her father and eldest sister came home soon, and there was certainly some confusion at the powers she was displaying; but neither of them reacted unfavorably towards the youngest displaying such an odd power.

However, Satoko did realize her young sister would... have issues in Japan now that she had clearly displayed such an odd power. Much to their father's chagrin, the eldest sister suggested that they send Sumiko to the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning. Sumiko was rather against it too, at first. However, after a long discussion (which devolved into their father bursting into tears), it was obvious this would be the best course.

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
Sumiko took a look around her... modest room, already a pang of homesickness developing as she began to settle into her new lodgings. She pulled out her phone, checking her messages. Hardly surprising, a number of them came from her dad, all wondering how she was doing and how much he missed her, but...

There weren't any responses from her friends. She'd received a few at first, but they had recently simply stopped. She held back a small sigh, clutching her phone to herself. Sumiko knew that she was a strange person, even before she developed mutant powers, but that didn't make it hurt any less to realize she had just lost a part of her life that she'd never get back.

She tried to push back such dark thoughts. Afterall, a place like this was meant for people like her, right? She could make new friends, and still have fun. She nodded to herself, thinking positive thoughts. Perhaps in a few weeks she could even enjoy a round of karaoke with a small group.

Oh, but...

Sumiko looked at the handout she'd been given, detailing her class schedule. She was a little crestfallen when she found out the school wasn't just for learning how to handle her sudden new powers. Not that she had any particular problems getting good grades, but...

I suppose I can always use more naps, she decided, nodding to herself as she looked on the bright side of things.

This shouldn't be too bad, right? What's the worse that could happen?

... then again, she never thought she'd have to be sent away from home just because she suddenly erupted into flames. Literally.
